Optional consideration

Should you also consider Medicare Advantage?

Once you understand Original Medicare + TFL, you can make an informed decision about whether a Medicare Advantage plan adds enough value to be worth it. This page is honest about both sides.

Make sure you've read "How OM + TFL work together" first

The honest summary

Medicare Advantage is a different way to receive your Medicare benefits — not an upgrade to Original Medicare.

Some retired military find Advantage adds real value through dental/vision/hearing benefits and Part B givebacks. Others prefer the freedom of Original Medicare + TFL with no network. There is no universally right answer — it depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, and your priorities.

Pros and cons — side by side

Where Medicare Advantage can win

  • Dental, vision, and hearing — major gaps in Medicare and TFL
  • Part B "giveback" on some plans reduces your monthly Social Security deduction
  • OTC, grocery, and fitness benefits add real dollar value
  • All-in-one card and plan management for some people
  • Some plans coordinate with TFL — but not all

Where Medicare Advantage can lose

  • You're limited to the plan's provider network — not any Medicare doctor
  • Prior authorizations may be required for specialists, imaging, or procedures
  • Plan benefits, formularies, and networks change every year
  • Built-in Part D may overlap or interact with your TRICARE pharmacy benefit
  • If you travel widely or live overseas part-year, networks can complicate care

Benefits typically included

These are common — but never assume. Confirm exactly what each plan covers in your ZIP code.

Dental coverage

Cleanings, fillings, dentures and more — not covered by Original Medicare or TFL.

Vision care

Annual eye exams and allowances for glasses or contacts.

Hearing benefits

Hearing exams and significant allowances for hearing aids — a major gap in Medicare/TFL.

Prescription drugs

Most plans include Part D drug coverage built in (note: you already have TRICARE Pharmacy).

Fitness programs

SilverSneakers and similar gym memberships at no extra cost.

OTC & grocery cards

Many plans give monthly allowances for over-the-counter items or healthy food.

A simple decision framework

  1. 1

Are your current doctors Medicare-participating and not all in one Advantage network?

If yes and you value provider freedom — Original Medicare + TFL is likely your best fit.

  2. 2

Do you spend significant out-of-pocket on dental, vision, or hearing?

Advantage may meaningfully offset those costs through plan benefits.

  3. 3

Would a Part B giveback make a real difference to your monthly budget?

Some veteran-targeted plans reduce or partially refund your Part B premium.

  4. 4

Are you comfortable managing a yearly plan review during AEP (Oct 15 – Dec 7)?

Advantage plans change every year. Original Medicare + TFL doesn't.
